Here at New Music Faster we are not opposed to recommending music that is sometimes completely different from other artists we’ve been recently recommending. In this instance, after a busy week, we are definitely up for some calming ambient music, and Alexe Marian delivers that for us most effectively.

Marian’s latest release is called “Absent” and offers four tracks of music that are both arresting and epic in their musical scope. Hailing from Pitești, Romania, we don’t know much about Marian, but the music really speaks for itself. Understatement is the order of the day here.

Opening with “Gossamer Wave” Marian delivers a sonic landscape sculpted by reverb-laden keyboards and presented in an almost cinematic way. The EP’s noirish artwork is of an ocean wave bathed in moonlight, and the music also reflects this suggested melancholy in its elegiac, sweeping movements. Adding to the sense that this is music with epic space in mind, is the fact that each of the four songs exceeds nine minutes in length, so this is basically an EP with material that would be considered a full album. The final track “Inner Space” presents music that is seemingly out of reach, with its reverb-drenched keyboard strings offering an almost hypnotic conclusion to the release. “Absent” seems to be entirely consistent with Marian’s other musical releases also found on Bandcamp.

These are songs made as soundtracks to movies that don’t exist yet, but they inspire us to imagine. This is music made for very late nights or really early mornings.
