New Music Faster : Dave East

Dave East
Hip Hop
RIYL: Nas, Killer Mike, Action Bronson

A Harlem-based MC who’s on Nas’s record label Mass Appeal, Dave East is here with a new single. Aptly named “Peter Pan,” the track sees East flexing his storytelling lyricism. East talks about a 37-year-old ex-convict who thinks they are still in their early twenties. Calling out those that will never grow up, he calls them Peter Pan.

The song also serves as a warning for those stuck in the street life and a cycle that many are trapped inside. East laments, “He loved his father but through his life he could not trust him. Damn near 40, just realized he ain’t got nothin’ / Had the green light for years, his connect hit the stop button / Back to nickel and dimin’ with young’ns on the block pumpin’.” This paints a poignant picture of how life on the streets can and will be.

Now, while it is unclear where this track is set to land, it follows the release of East’s mixtape P2, which dropped in January. Last year, we also saw the release of his record Paranoia: A True Story and Karma via Def Jam, Mass Appeal, and From The Dirt Records.

Ultimately, if this track is any indication, we’ll hear more hard-hitting narratives on a new record, whenever, and wherever Dave East chooses to release it. For now, “Peter Pan” serves as a great start for more great tunes from East soon.

Now, while we have not covered a lot a hip hop here on New Music Faster, expect to see more of it in the lineup. There are a lot of talented artists out there from many genres and many locales. We are committed to bringing you the newest, freshest music possible – and Dave East is definitely among those with new, and GREAT new music.
