New Artists "Broken" on WSOU
WSOU 89.5 FM, nationally recognized as one of the country's top college radio stations, broadcasts to over 100,000 people per week over the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area. In its 14th year of hard rock programming, Seton Hall's WSOU has earned national recognition from industry monitors Arbitron, College Music Journal, and Billboard magazine. Because unsigned bands have difficulty being heard, college stations like WSOU can often help to "break" obscure groups. WSOU's radio program Street Patrol "gives exposure to local bands through radio air play and provides WSOU listeners a chance to hear what is on the local scene first," DJ Lenny Specht said. Local talent is also promoted by giving away tickets and CD's, and by sponsoring contests such as Exposure '99 and the "Women in Rock" showcase at Webster Hall last year. The press coverage of these events by New Jersey music papers exposed new artists to the public. WSOU promotes new artists by rotating 47 artists in its charts, with new artists being added weekly. It also provides a list of top requests, such as artist Linkin Park. "I would actually be very surprised if Linkin Park didn't get massive amounts of airplay on MTV," DJ Dan Holway said.
