Surf the "Third Coast":
Texas' Unique Brand of Music

Go to KSYM

KSYM 90.1 FM proudly proclaims itself to be "San Antonio's Only Alternative!" Run by the students of San Antonio College, the format includes everything from adult album alternative to Latino to reggae, proving that they aren't just bragging. At home in this mix of non-commercial programming is the Third Coast Music Network.

Among the styles that are deemed "Third Coast" are:

Third Coast's Crazy Lanni

  • Americana
  • Roots
  • Blues
  • Western
  • Cajun
  • Zydeco
  • Creole
  • Swamp Rock
  • Texan
  • Every possible variation of country

The Third Coast is the only show to run every day at KSYM, and it stands out as one of the highlights of the station's programming. A group of DJs outside of San Antonio College created this highly specialized genre of music, said its founder Joe Horn.

Known on-air as Joe X, Horn is slippery when it comes to giving a clear definition of Third Coast music. The Network's webpage implies that if you don't already know what Third Coast is, you probably won't get it.

For those who struggle anyway, the idea of the title comes from the general misconception that anything of cultural worth only comes from either the east or the west coasts. The Third Coast Music Network begs to differ noting that artistic innovations between New York and Los Angeles are to be found on the Gulf Coast.

"The other two coasts are such arrogant bastards about the arts that anyone who doesn't fit in is likely to be Third Coast," said Horn.

Though the music featured on Third Coast certainly exhibits the influence of this region, it is by no means limited to the states of Texas and Louisiana.

The Third Coast show can be listened to online at KSYM's website:
  • Monday through Friday: 3 to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday: 2 to 6 p.m.
  • Sunday: 6 to 10 p.m.
